In Hawaii the name Ukelele roughly translates to "jumping flea" due to the jumping action of one's fingers while playing it. But Queen Lili'uokalani, the last Hawaiian monarch, declared that the name Ukelele means “the gift that came here", establishing it as a Hawaiian icon. Yes, this happy little guitar charmed its way to center stage in the islands, and into the hearts of the island people.
The Ukelele soon outgrew the borders of the beautiful islands and made its way into the folk and rock music of the world at large--first made popular by Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwo'ole in his medley of Over the Rainbow and What A Wonderful World.
